Neve Community


                         Neve Community is a Community which is only located

in Northern Maharashtra, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. It is 

sub caste of Wani” Caste. According to mythologies Neve 

community was Descendants of Mahant” (Monk) of Sorti 

Somanath Temple, Saurashtra”. In medieval Era, when Mahmud 

Gazni invaded Sorati Somanath Temple (In 1025 A.D). Forefathers 

of Neve Community try to resist but against brutal attack of 

Gazani’s Forces they retreat from somnath and migrate towards 

Deccan. They take shelter in Khandesh Region and for Livelihood 

they start business. These New Comer Community known as a 

Nave (New) Wani wani means Baniya. And the “Nave Wani” 

Changes in “Neve - Wani”. Originally Neve’s were Saurashtri 

Rigvedic Bramhin but no any Evidence can prove this Claim. 

Afterwards neve community entered in various businesses. Like 

groceries, dealerships, wholesale and retail shops.


Traditions


            . Members of Neve-wani Community shares Same 

surname “Neve”. Muk Mahadev or Maun Vrat is a unique 

tradition of Neve Community. This is a worship of Lord 

Mahadeva which is to do at riverbank. it may be the remains of 

communities past of Sorati Somnath. Within this ritual practice 

menfolk of Community come together at riverbank. And take bath 

in river water. Then they make Shivlingamof Sand and seat 

around the “Shivlingam” for Pray. After that they reached home 

with sand and make “Shivlingam” again, here womenfolk’ joins 

the worship. Whole family had lunch together with Mauna 

(Silence). Hence it called as Muk Mahadev” or “Maun Vrat


            Within marital relation “Gautra” and  "lineage" are 

consider. Marriage within Same Gautra is Prohibited. As well as 

Marital relation within first cousins are also avoids. Some of 

Gautra of Neve Community as above- Dattatrayaor Atreya, 

Gaurayan, Chilayan, Aaryan, Kashyap, Bharadvaj, Vadvanal…etc. 

and Lineage are Kanaldekar, Mahurkar, Sakalikar, Adawadkar, 

Yawalkar, Burhanpurkar, Hakim- Vaidya, Book Sellers, Diwan, 

Dalal. Dowry system was absent in Neve Community. Most of 

the Family is join family but Now a days Next Generation migrate 

for livelihood and settled out of the station.

            Neve Community follow most of the festivals of Hinduism 

like Ganeshotsav, Navratri, Shivratri, Dussara. And Some 

Khandeshi Festivals like Kanubai che Rot, Chakrapuja.

  7. Nicely narrated...But, We have our own cultural traditions, which are clearly indicating that we are Rigwedi Brahmins...That point is missing in article.
